Commission for client
The client wanted a porcupine design that would later translate into a pendant. However, her request was for an old Scandinavian style.
Of the 6 eras that were distinct in the art of the Viking era, one of the least popular celebrated is the Ringerike style; even thought the second last era, it was overshadowed by the Urnes era, immediately succeeding it [and the Oseberg Era- the first era-, for it's rare, scarcity amount of artifact in comparison].
I decided to select this style since the content- a porcupine- could benefit visually from the characteristic "horns" that embellish most of the beastly figures.
Since the execution of the design is very plain [in the sense that it was going to be a simple vector of the creation of the pendant], I decided to embellish it at least for the client. I made it look like one of my many illustration for University, when documenting the figures.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-43928162431956131442013-03-18T23:52:00.001-07:002013-03-18T23:52:59.034-07:00The Carver and the Moon

The client wanted something that reflected certain aspects of her character, and so I helped her decide upon some symbolism that would be appropriate;
The Carver- a symbol for the artisan/crafter
The Moon- a dominantly feminine sign that went well with the kind of dialectic [opposites] she wanted, as well as association with water.

Some projects are absolutely fantastic, in that they are super harmonized; great idea, great characters, and great environment! I had the opportunity to illustrate 5 bird friends, all hanging out on a rooftop of a city scape. It was the perfect contemporary urban setting and idea.. and I was certainly in the mood for it!
I'm also posting just the layout sans the characters- some of the buildings in the skyline are/were in my hometown of Toronto. It was great and sentimental. :)

I admit, I've been dragging my legs posting my art since the beginning of the year. Truth be told, I got contracted to work at another studio, and it's been the focus of my time, so I forgot to update blogger. I wish I had some sort of script that would let me post to all my internet mainframes, and update them all at once. :)
Anyways, onto the card!
This card is super strait forward.
It was also one that was completed in one sitting... and when I finished, I was thinking to myself "well, that's that".
I usually fiddle with the cards and tweak them endlessly... and this one just didn't. Strait forward to the end.
Originally I had included the eyes, but on a second glance I really did not want such an ominous look to it. The Emperor card isn't a bad on necessarily, so I wanted to alleviate any more-than-necessary negativity to it.
And that's that.

They are BACK!
After along hiatus, I resumed making the Star Wars Tarot cards. My goal is for one a week.
I was deliberating multiple aspects of this card.
First, I originally drew a Padawan/Knight figure holding the sword, but opted to remove any figures for the "Ace" cards simply to avoid any confusions with the "Master" cards of the same suit.
Second, was the color of the card- I originally wanted a darker blue color but wanted the Ace card to reflect the "general dominant" color of the suite. After reviewing my previous cards, the dominant "Purple" color prevailed [coincidentally the color of Mace's Sword, who is also the Master of the suit].
When designing this card, one of the images that banged through my head was using the symbol for the Order of the Knights as the actual base concept. I simply punched out a rough concept of fleshing out the symbol to its more physical form- Mace Windu's sword being utilized for the lightsaber of choice [he IS the Master of Swords, after all], all the while the wings reflecting the 2 said of the Force Users.
I opted to use Green instead of Blue [for the wing] because of a color theory purpose, more than anything else. The blue made most of the card uniform in its visual presentation, and almost "invisible".
Now, my major issue is how to use the same concept with the other suits. Sadly, some of the logos that fit the visual side will not fit the symbolic side, or might imply that the suit is either "good" or "evil". Time to crack that drafting board!Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-8212631308500722472012-02-16T13:33:00.000-08:002012-02-16T13:38:27.298-08:00Back with a BANG!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 207px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghkV9NCc45ckoTsBxAfQBENMgahlM2K1aXSVJZWnQiI8_HWgF2-J_FVu3NxfnHDLviLkGEgA9Rea_mWo7Dd7RPaorGqg0l2uTR20Smu1SJMdqHxvhCNOiZJVKCAoJl8Cku4ZUyQoM35TE/s320/jedi_temple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709850240429554754" />

After 6 months of studio work, purging my room and studio, I can finally bring up to date my blog!
I admit, I tend to neglect this place when I'm under contract simply because of the time restrictions... but when those finish, I deliver!
Going back to catching up some of the past content:
I'm notorious for a few things.
The relevant things for tonight are; I will get seriously ill twice a year. These will be done within intervals of 5-6 months. And when I do, I usually turn to making fan art and indulge in non-employment projects to pass the time [and the symptoms] in peace.
Since I have been suffering a serious sinus infection, and upper respiratory irritation for the last 3 days, guys what I did to pass the time?

I've always wanted to make a layout using the "dry brush" technique. Since I had a sketch of Qui-gon and Obi-wan in my "Tarot" style, I figured I'd take the time and create the "spread" layout I had in my "sketches" folder.
That's a lot of quotations.

One of the concepts I was fancying over the last few years was to be able to see my art in the "Star Wars Insider" magazine. I would also indulge this little fantasy by adding that it would be in "Insiders" because of some 2D short or film I would produce with the SW character of choice.
Well, life has its own agendas, and while I might not have been able to make that short just yet [I always have idea on the back burner... who knows?], I figured I'd indulge myself and create the spread anyways.
Boy, I did say "Indulge" a lot in this post. And yet again, more quotations!
I'm on a feverish role.

Anyways, one of the things I would often imagine is how it "felt" to be in the Jedi temple. You know, those weird sentimental memories one has of specific ways the specific seasons would reflect in one's home? Like, how the sunlight hit a certain room, or the way the twilight would feel in a specific season... I wanted to try and capture those kinds of moments within the Jedi Temple. So when recreating this interior, I wanted to have a layout that was deeply atmospheric.
Drawing upon a lot of the Buddhist temples, and medieval castle interiors, I wanted to have a "fire lit" corridor. Considering that SW is set in a technologically advanced galaxy, I figured that the torches or fire pots would be replaced by in-wall illumination of the same color.
Gives the same feel, but for a galaxy far far away.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-46166810768393683902011-08-19T23:52:00.000-07:002011-08-19T23:58:04.036-07:00Rose Marie Promotional Flyer<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI_r0X1YUPc56oRdXlhA_VZB8Rq2rkZY4xVt0qgiQOWelYlvr1R9hbMUnlN5onJi4FSCuWKrMaTWzaDLuzutwdJDF5YGl5y0OfD-ZfkKQiWXHiItTbFM5QMxhNZo4q8-FiEA-yM9Pg65Q/s320/rose_marie_flyer_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5642827754374566322" />
Back in April I worked for a local Opera Production Company for their theatrical feature "Rose Marie".
Amongst the art done for the production [like the stage prop totem pole], the promotional flyer was also designed by myself. I decided to approach it in a very different stylized manner to help reflect the more contemporary edge the Opera was set in. :)Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-7733618288851397162011-06-05T22:48:00.000-07:002011-06-05T23:03:25.691-07:00Wish Opera<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuSDMboEmjtQLSENPKCiGuSwFLRw11T1SOQ4F-VkfOD1FKCDZ_1zhvDOgJFqov4pQraFm7aUVzLWXj45G5bYGQ7VCmdeO3skcJ6ZjymyWewo39y861x4791f7uj5v9oRRX7yIAHPm7wJA/s320/ftp01.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614980515386276690" />

On April 29th, the Opera "Rose Marie" debuted. I had the AMAZING pleasure of working on the production with some insanely talented people... and now that it's over, I wanted to post a visual process of creation; I summarized my carving of the Totem Pole stage prop from start to finish.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBe9vclDpI-ZSV56SfS70nUHOWGAFvyp4M4HklIDKoUj4EboCgYxu1OhJ4EOJsi9J3JoYPxuwccpCdR5l7hAidMID2BxOSsbX9fflTP6fFAq1UjDzEaxtlDop9zN9-yA5pUFh-Si2APLc/s320/ftp02.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614980785305478386" />

Working for the theater is the most stunning experience for me; as I said before, I am an avid traditionalist, and the theater is truly the setting for the classic arts... also demanding a different thought process and approach then most media. This totem pole is a perfect example of that- because I had to construct what would appear to be a pole made of wood, but factually an impossible task to be done in the short period of time I had. Foam was the perfect solution- I could work on every figure independently, and also care to make the cuts in the foam look like wood.

Funny when we attended the actual opera, we were so taken aback we actually forgot to take a picture while watching it unfold... so lucky me that the production staff actually did. :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijIDorboVIzA5d1MjNI5PPozfT5iOgtZOBrH_23efoF7dq6KSsUeD4QwyYoTZdX7i-S4IzWxNwSDMxcKRti2Rj9DtD9WgmQV3C2GGAYDAOxyXUjOsoiznLnVrZOYeu0to-fssE1817ZLU/s320/ftp03.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614982218089761362" />

That's 10 feet of foam right there folks.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-12098823922736911882011-05-08T22:49:00.000-07:002011-05-08T22:51:20.676-07:00Godric- Meeting the Light<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPFfuSfl9Upt90L9k9lN6O9yZHHqCxyRUb25ofQKaeTp_l8VknsZQ4kCEg6tuFUG0PblLa3luGn49-lc8dI7rsiXSJyO8GktSB6gL9DANWhwLtp7tXCtnxcSRpZjjKGj6sn6nzwIXw80Q/s320/godric.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604589485029813250" />

Originally this was a Birthday Portrait for Allan Hyde (Actor who plays Godric), which was drawn out on a Canson board roughly 16" x 20".

I had saved the picture until I was notified that the gift was delivered... I had already picked him way back in the day, but having people confirm this with their opinions made me sure of my decision even more.

Like the originals “Fool” Card, Jar Jar is aloof and seemingly unaware of the danger that lurks right around the corner- however I substituted the cliff with the war-tank behind him. The green and watery landscape of Naboo help build that contrast to the “foreboding” dark base color the card is illustrated on- and even the sky changes color from a serene blue, to a wild yellow. A card of “innocent ignorance wile inobservance” is the main criteria, and Jar Jar’s bright body color and jolly detached attitude plays the part really well.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-55572456347175102622011-03-16T23:32:00.000-07:002011-03-16T23:33:52.611-07:00Circle of Crows<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 311px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4P-Q_y45NETheGI5BZFnxwoFzjyBXkV1Xrm_0l9UGQHgaDhcU5hYoCQc7fiSeL3M05IRioPb_DeEc3AU4566sfSveiRl5ZVLl2nK8iurJQGd3-f4KTgBgIDuPPMkboOXTmLRLW7at1eM/s320/circle_of_crows_by_tarkheki-d36bxqk.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584932974453659826" />

Commission for client.

She wanted to have one of three dreams illustrated in the NWP style, and I told her I would only if they wouldn’t break any taboo or infringe on cultural concepts. Lucky that after I reviewed what she wanted, nothing out of the ordinary appeared!

This was the one I wanted to do the most- simply because of the clarity of the image in my head, and the concept within it:

I was taken by the description of all the crows harassing the mother for food, and the mother trying to chide her son into calming down.
I am fond of the archetypes of Protectors, and I wanted to really have that element encompassed in the image with the Motherhood theme. But I also love the symbolic correlation to the birds, and that connection to nature. So I depicted a mother clearly relaxed and "smiling" with one hand up (the palm face forward is a sign of peace and welcome), second hand around her baby who is crying. This symbol is one of motherhood, and motherhood compassion and protection. A common motif in Aboriginal art.
Second, the ring of crows all around the mother- this visually helps that feeling of foreboding the child feels because of being encompassed by so many birds, but the relaxed figure of the mother puts the viewers mind at ease. Also, the birds are not foreboding, and their beaks- while open- not gaping wide... they are also seemingly making a pattern similar to rays of light off the Sun… and almost look like they too are protecting the mother, as opposed to serious threat.

It was a lovely commission with a really great product at the end, and both of us were very satisfied.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-516854982132720222011-03-04T20:24:00.000-08:002011-03-04T20:30:08.987-08:00Black Dragon<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBvDnsgMX1PPyFXXFZ5qo8aERX7KhQ4qZU18noL889NNqqHqcRdC_wIY6abgn6N6OkO0xdDkigteOSKyYbTpzeXGxGeAliDyVktAbN4ufcT1mZfIxttNAn-h9-0w6G58iWTMR7hyF2DUw/s320/black_dragon_by_tarkheki-d342x2u.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580447309750795890" />

As many people don’t know, part of the North West Pacific tradition of art, is asking permission. A lot of non community members think it's ok to randomly throw together something that looks "in the style" simply because they can, and the style is "cool".
This is NOT the case. Aboriginal art is very deep rooted in the cultural traditions, and many of them have specific rules as to how one draws something, portrays something, or if they even have the right to [which usually means also a ton of taboos that could be broken if not handled right].
This is VERY hard for non-community members to understand because they live a life of self indulgence and entitlement.
I lived and worked within the community for 10+ years now, and if there is one thing I am STILL doing is asking permission. This NEVER stops.

I was in Vancouver, visiting some friends in the local Community. I had the pleasure of going down to one of my friend’s houses and attending a family gathering, that included a lot of members from their community.
During my attendance, I had figured that I would try and “obtain” some permission to do some artwork that breached out of the “norm”. After all, this would be a perfect time, as when the Elders and family gets-together, and they ask if anyone has something to get out in the open... now’s my chance.

Push comes to shove, I asked, discussed, reasoned, and gifted [paid the price] to get the rights to do some stuff. But there were 2 instances I REALLY had to discuss my POV and this picture is a result of one of them.

Most of the Elders were not pleased with the idea that European folklore would be depicted in this style. When I asked about some of the supernatural beings, they plainly refused.
It was only after I brought up the fact that another NWP artist- who is half Irish in decent- already broke that barrier to design a “Dragon”, did some of the Elders shift their consideration. Turns out, it wasn’t that they were against me doing it; simply, they wanted me to fight for it. They wanted me to prove that I had enough of their cultural knowledge, and manners to actually request something of this sort. I was told that if I had been anyone else- including a new comer to the culture, or someone who was just "an artist" with no knowledge, I would be plainly refused. But my investments and dedication to the culture and it's rules is what "won" my right. To everyone else, they would condemn them.
That too, is a cultural mentality.

So because I earned that right, I could post this with a quiet conscious, and silent heart.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-8174329736473136912011-02-16T20:37:00.000-08:002011-02-16T20:38:18.929-08:00Grey Shark<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLsqmNVYoFgHd3W2tTfbJaQNsCadpgFj8nTpVYvzdt-Ew2f4uNrZA791xxErUcaojrtYpWEZi76q5pEyClkz-7_HDN4zhbFXOjyxCC8KI73zyTrXfr5VyUZ7of8eU7DYyGJutvrLr27Vw/s320/grey_shark_by_tarkheki-d33wwvx.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5574513061272622802" />

Some of the shapes I used in the image were to induce the "water ripple" effect- multiple lines that look akin to waves and ripples. This is actually a compound of two words: "Fire" and "Cow".

The reason Bison are called this is becuase the plains on which they live are notorious for burning up- plain fires are common, and would make the Bison flee.
From here stemmed the term; whether it was because the Bison fleeing the fire would make them seem as if emerging from the fire, or perhaps the fact that they were also engulfed in the flames while running, or simply because the local Aboriginals were associating the local environment with the type of cow - it makes for an interesting term.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-27124654661303191922011-02-06T09:41:00.000-08:002011-02-06T09:42:53.111-08:00Black Husky<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7o2ORLdP9u-qomIYxZV3oo4E8-12ejMu9sirD9Uz5rpUXmVxrIzvKEKd18NNOF-kE6_bB9jb6xh6JGnUNKdpPgUHo7TWSkeKxUDHdq5RaOvGM4hiexJuyP97XFom7_nQKZrjOqTRiPtE/s320/black_husky_by_tarkheki-d33f3qt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570633265426657154" />

Huskies are one of the most often used sled-dogs... and quite popular with people who want to own Wolves but obviously do not actually want to OWN a wolf. Quickly calling up friends, family, and extended relations so we could all hang out together and reminisce.

During the trip, I wanted to venture into making some art while challenging my design hand. So instead of dealing with NWP art via line thickness and weight, I wanted shape and color. My goal was to do a bunch of monochromatic images depicting some animals that came to mind (and were requested by some individuals).
Dealing with this style is hard, because anyone who knows anything about First Nations know that it demands a cultural understanding, lots of prior learning, and cannot be done simply becuase the illustrator "likes the style". Many non-community members take it upon themselves to dabble in this style, and create offensive and culturally insulting pieces. They are not even aware of this because they have no prior understanding to what they are doing.

Because of my connection, work, and relations to fist nations cultures and people, I take this cultural appropriation VERY seriously. I cannot fathom those silly people who think they can simply take something from someone else's culture, and think it's OK. I wan trained in the style by the people, and with the cultural rules applied, and still do.
I say this because within this series of designs, I had to come across a lot of cultural infringement- and deliberalty had to ask permission from the Elders of the local communities the right to do some of the things I did. Over the next few days, I'll be illustrating some of the events that I had to go through in order to design some of the images.Bernice Gordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13424720623360376392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510912730795371219.post-85313331534047760092011-02-03T16:43:00.000-08:002011-02-03T16:49:28.659-08:00True Blood- Russell and Talbot<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib_ZY-xIZjHnexawKJgv761offtwgOGz2-q0y7rASWRoi5d9WAybYiLp-B4O1o4Y75p_xrWVa8kHBfB0uaNyPOO2qtfUx9KCazAM0JoNimbPbcDo7zRIFjPs6jE6deUdpLgi_FPt1yPTc/s320/russell+and+talbot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569629080193542274" />

Continuing with the recent theme- uploading work from Oct while I was sick. :)

I personally loved Season 3 of True Blood. I know a lot of fans just couldn't stop complaining about it, but I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole season. I also adored Russel and Talbot very much- for whatever their relationship might have been, it was Russel’s “Goodbye to Talbot” speech that had me in tears. I suppose it was because it was frank, true, and honest – and something we don’t get to see in relationships today anymore. Basically; love. Unconditional, and uncompromising.

That, and it was Dennis O'Hare delivering the lines. The sheer awesome of that man performing literally leaves a tear in the fabric of space-time-continuum.

I also noticed a scene where I think Russel was wearing a fish-net like stocking… and I was like DAMN… that DUDE is wearing those far better then I could EVER wear them.
Oh well.
The roses nearly gave me an aneurysm.
