Rose Marie Promotional Flyer

Back in April I worked for a local Opera Production Company for their theatrical feature "Rose Marie".
Amongst the art done for the production [like the stage prop totem pole], the promotional flyer was also designed by myself. I decided to approach it in a very different stylized manner to help reflect the more contemporary edge the Opera was set in. :)

On April 29th, the Opera "Rose Marie" debuted. I had the AMAZING pleasure of working on the production with some insanely talented people... and now that it's over, I wanted to post a visual process of creation; I summarized my carving of the Totem Pole stage prop from start to finish.

Working for the theater is the most stunning experience for me; as I said before, I am an avid traditionalist, and the theater is truly the setting for the classic arts... also demanding a different thought process and approach then most media. This totem pole is a perfect example of that- because I had to construct what would appear to be a pole made of wood, but factually an impossible task to be done in the short period of time I had. Foam was the perfect solution- I could work on every figure independently, and also care to make the cuts in the foam look like wood.

Funny when we attended the actual opera, we were so taken aback we actually forgot to take a picture while watching it unfold... so lucky me that the production staff actually did. :)

That's 10 feet of foam right there folks.

Godric- Meeting the Light

Originally this was a Birthday Portrait for Allan Hyde (Actor who plays Godric), which was drawn out on a Canson board roughly 16" x 20".

I had saved the picture until I was notified that the gift was delivered... I originally posted this on my birthday, earlier this year.

Good Words

One of the short films I have in the works.
“Good Words” is a short film that speaks about many issues in one- from conservation of our environment, as well as diversity of culture.
The audio is actually the opening to “500 Nations”... a documentary produced and release in the light of the “Dances with Wolves” phenomena. While I cannot obtain the rights to the audio, I intended to produce this short anyways… more as an exercise in animation, as well as voicing a personal opinion bout our current state of environmental affairs.

I am still working on this short as we speak- and am working with a friend of mine as well. I'm hoping to complete it within the next few months. :)

Star Wars Tarot- The Fool

For those who thought I had forgotten about this series: I haven’t. :)

This is the latest submission for my “Star Wars tarot” deck project I have been working on.

I think this one was an obvious decision, as I even had some people inquire if Jar Jar would be the candidate for "The Fool". I had already picked him way back in the day, but having people confirm this with their opinions made me sure of my decision even more.

Like the originals “Fool” Card, Jar Jar is aloof and seemingly unaware of the danger that lurks right around the corner- however I substituted the cliff with the war-tank behind him. The green and watery landscape of Naboo help build that contrast to the “foreboding” dark base color the card is illustrated on- and even the sky changes color from a serene blue, to a wild yellow. A card of “innocent ignorance wile inobservance” is the main criteria, and Jar Jar’s bright body color and jolly detached attitude plays the part really well.

Circle of Crows

She wanted to have one of three dreams illustrated in the NWP style, and I told her I would only if they wouldn’t break any taboo or infringe on cultural concepts. Lucky that after I reviewed what she wanted, nothing out of the ordinary appeared!

This was the one I wanted to do the most- simply because of the clarity of the image in my head, and the concept within it:

I was taken by the description of all the crows harassing the mother for food, and the mother trying to chide her son into calming down.
I am fond of the archetypes of Protectors, and I wanted to really have that element encompassed in the image with the Motherhood theme. But I also love the symbolic correlation to the birds, and that connection to nature. So I depicted a mother clearly relaxed and "smiling" with one hand up (the palm face forward is a sign of peace and welcome), second hand around her baby who is crying. This symbol is one of motherhood, and motherhood compassion and protection. A common motif in Aboriginal art.
Second, the ring of crows all around the mother- this visually helps that feeling of foreboding the child feels because of being encompassed by so many birds, but the relaxed figure of the mother puts the viewers mind at ease. Also, the birds are not foreboding, and their beaks- while open- not gaping wide... they are also seemingly making a pattern similar to rays of light off the Sun… and almost look like they too are protecting the mother, as opposed to serious threat.

It was a lovely commission with a really great product at the end, and both of us were very satisfied.

Black Dragon

As many people don’t know, part of the North West Pacific tradition of art, is asking permission. A lot of non community members think it's ok to randomly throw together something that looks "in the style" simply because they can, and the style is "cool".
This is NOT the case. Aboriginal art is very deep rooted in the cultural traditions, and many of them have specific rules as to how one draws something, portrays something, or if they even have the right to [which usually means also a ton of taboos that could be broken if not handled right].
This is VERY hard for non-community members to understand because they live a life of self indulgence and entitlement.
I lived and worked within the community for 10+ years now, and if there is one thing I am STILL doing is asking permission. This NEVER stops.

I was in Vancouver, visiting some friends in the local Community. I had the pleasure of going down to one of my friend’s houses and attending a family gathering, that included a lot of members from their community.
During my attendance, I had figured that I would try and “obtain” some permission to do some artwork that breached out of the “norm”. After all, this would be a perfect time, as when the Elders and family gets-together, and they ask if anyone has something to get out in the open... now’s my chance.

Push comes to shove, I asked, discussed, reasoned, and gifted [paid the price] to get the rights to do some stuff. But there were 2 instances I REALLY had to discuss my POV and this picture is a result of one of them.

Most of the Elders were not pleased with the idea that European folklore would be depicted in this style. When I asked about some of the supernatural beings, they plainly refused.
It was only after I brought up the fact that another NWP artist- who is half Irish in decent- already broke that barrier to design a “Dragon”, did some of the Elders shift their consideration. Turns out, it wasn’t that they were against me doing it; simply, they wanted me to fight for it. They wanted me to prove that I had enough of their cultural knowledge, and manners to actually request something of this sort. I was told that if I had been anyone else- including a new comer to the culture, or someone who was just "an artist" with no knowledge, I would be plainly refused. But my investments and dedication to the culture and it's rules is what "won" my right. To everyone else, they would condemn them.
That too, is a cultural mentality.

So because I earned that right, I could post this with a quiet conscious, and silent heart.

Grey Shark

Some of the shapes I used in the image were to induce the "water ripple" effect- multiple lines that look akin to waves and ripples. But I also mimicked and stylized some of the shapes to be reminiscent of the traditional fishing tools of the NWP aboriginals. It gives a very all-encompassing concept, what with the shark being a predator/fisherman of it's own kind.

Green Transformation

While Werewovles do not exist in the Aboriginal cultures, the concept of transformation, and transforming into animals is a concept you see regularly in the Oral Traditions.
Here, we see a human, transforming into a Wolf... the legs beginning to deform out of shape, and the last remenance of the human body- the hand- is evident. The Hand is a symbol of Healing in many Aboriginal cultures- Healing, Medicine, and Remembrance.
I wanted the hand evident to indicate that the transformation is a Healing one, and one of remembrance- back to a time we were inseparable form nature and from The Bush.

Red Bison

In Ojibwa, "Bison" is called "Mishikode-bizhikeh". This is actually a compound of two words: "Fire" and "Cow".

The reason Bison are called this is becuase the plains on which they live are notorious for burning up- plain fires are common, and would make the Bison flee.
From here stemmed the term; whether it was because the Bison fleeing the fire would make them seem as if emerging from the fire, or perhaps the fact that they were also engulfed in the flames while running, or simply because the local Aboriginals were associating the local environment with the type of cow - it makes for an interesting term.

Black Husky

Huskies are one of the most often used sled-dogs... and quite popular with people who want to own Wolves but obviously do not actually want to OWN a wolf. XD

All the dogs I know that belong to my Aboriginal friends are also sled dogs, so usually are husky or malamut mixes. A little tribute to the Animosh that carry us when "Kissina Kwajin!"

Black Jackal

I admit, the black-gold combo was clearly subconsciously influenced by the over abundant images of Anubis in Gold attire from Egyptian culture... but rather then fight the color scheme, I ran with it.
Also, while I was supposed to keep everything monochromatic, this one felt as if it needed the 2 extra colors for effect. All in all, I am happy with how it turned out.

There is a long standing dispute in Aboriginal Myth about the existent of "Jackals". While not called by this term, they are described like "Smaller Coyotes" and darker in color. Conservationist have a similar dispute in regard to smaller Plains Coyote vs. Northern Coyotes that are larger- some even stipulating that the smaller plains coyote is a sub species or a type of jackal.
I decided to run with the theme and illustrate one of these "Small Coyotes".

Blue Raven

Back in Nov, I made my annual trip to the West Coast.
My twin sister was convocating her Masters, and both my mother and I wanted to be there.
Curing my stay, I touched based with my friends who were First Nations and lived in the local area. Quickly calling up friends, family, and extended relations so we could all hang out together and reminisce.

During the trip, I wanted to venture into making some art while challenging my design hand. So instead of dealing with NWP art via line thickness and weight, I wanted shape and color. My goal was to do a bunch of monochromatic images depicting some animals that came to mind (and were requested by some individuals).
Dealing with this style is hard, because anyone who knows anything about First Nations know that it demands a cultural understanding, lots of prior learning, and cannot be done simply becuase the illustrator "likes the style". Many non-community members take it upon themselves to dabble in this style, and create offensive and culturally insulting pieces. They are not even aware of this because they have no prior understanding to what they are doing.

Because of my connection, work, and relations to fist nations cultures and people, I take this cultural appropriation VERY seriously. I cannot fathom those silly people who think they can simply take something from someone else's culture, and think it's OK. I wan trained in the style by the people, and with the cultural rules applied, and still do.
I say this because within this series of designs, I had to come across a lot of cultural infringement- and deliberalty had to ask permission from the Elders of the local communities the right to do some of the things I did. Over the next few days, I'll be illustrating some of the events that I had to go through in order to design some of the images.

True Blood- Russell and Talbot

Continuing with the recent theme- uploading work from Oct while I was sick. :)

I personally loved Season 3 of True Blood. I know a lot of fans just couldn't stop complaining about it, but I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole season. I also adored Russel and Talbot very much- for whatever their relationship might have been, it was Russel’s “Goodbye to Talbot” speech that had me in tears. I suppose it was because it was frank, true, and honest – and something we don’t get to see in relationships today anymore. Basically; love. Unconditional, and uncompromising.

That, and it was Dennis O'Hare delivering the lines. The sheer awesome of that man performing literally leaves a tear in the fabric of space-time-continuum.

I also noticed a scene where I think Russel was wearing a fish-net like stocking… and I was like DAMN… that DUDE is wearing those far better then I could EVER wear them.
Oh well.
The roses nearly gave me an aneurysm. But they were worth it!

True Blood- Bill and Sookie

Still updating form... wow, 5 months ago. I really fell behind keeping up my blog since I'm working a million things all at once.
but this changes now!

The second portraiture I did when I was really sick back in Oct.
I'm particularly proud of myself since my mom actually recognized Anna Paquinn in this one. She doesn’t watch True Blood, so she doesn't know who any of these people are... but she did remember Anna from another of her movies.

Admit it, every time you see Bill or Sookie, you think "Suu-keh"... XD

True Blood- Godric and Eric

I drew this.. wow, nearly 5 months ago!
I had the flu and figured I'd work on portraiture in order to get my mind off how bad I felt.
I passed out twice while working on it... but it still came out fine. XD
This show is my guilty pleasure. I don't watch TV now-a-days anymore.. but this show and Big Bang are pretty much the only "TV" I watch [cartoons not included. I always watch that].

Star Wars Tarot- Knight of Swords

This one comes a little late but with good reason: I have begun production on another animated short. So my time is now dedicated between multiple part time jobs, these tarot cards, commissions, and an animated short.

Into the flames with us!

In my deck, I changed the elements of the specific suites; particularly between Swords and Staves [Wands]. Because I associate wood with air, and swords with aggression- hence fire- I switched them in my deck. While this image is reminiscent of the Staves [Wands] Knight, because of its aggressive association I switched it to Swords.
And I can do whatever I want because this is my deck so na-na-na-boo-boo.

A little note about the “horse” Anakin is ridding. Years ago when watching the prequels (Episode 2 just came out) I was a little disheveled that the “Knights” did not have “horses”. You can’t be a “Knight in shinning armor one a white horse” if there isn’t any horse!
So obviously, I took it upon myself to create horse-like creature, but keep some obvious “alien animal” qualities to it (Dude, ANLTERS!). Of course, since then there were a number of “mounts” used I the SW saga, but I’m partial to my “horse” thing because it’s mine and I think it’s cool and I used to SW RPG with one!

Star Wars Tarot- Master of Energy

Your hair is red-brown. Not white. Even thought you insist in every design of mine to HAVE white hair, it is indeed red-brown. Being so adamant is only trying my guilt of Fan Accuracy vs. Guilt of Artistic License and puts me in a fowl mood.
I understand you have are the “Grey Jedi”; however that is a metaphoric reference, not a physical trait. Please make that distinguishing differentiation as to allow me to proceed with designing your cards without the need to foam at the mouth.

Like it’s family-card (Padawan of Energy), Master of Energy depicts not only the “flow” of energy, but also the associative element of Water. “King” of this family, it once again amused me how accurately Qui-gon’s character description modeled the King of Cups- from the diplomatic and non-aggressive approach to disputes, all the way to the tirelessly devious attitude if crossed. Obi-wan predecessor without a doubt.

Star Wars Tarot- Master of Planets

This was a card that started off as very plain. I realized that it would pack a punch after the color was applied- and it did. However, during the course of it, there was an off-again, on-again love-hate relationship with the card. And I just kept reminding myself to hang in there- the color would vastly improve it.

Also, during my time working on the card, Jason Derulo’s “Riding Solo” came on the radio at least half a dozen times. This only made me laugh every time it did- because the first few times I heard that song I couldn’t help but think about Han Solo when he hit the chorus. So eventually when the song came on, I would hold up my card and point when he said “Solo”.

Bison Concept

Back in 2003, I was attending my first year at Animation. During that time, I had caricatured one of our teachers [Kaj Pendal] as a Bison. This was amongst the first concept for my “Raven” film.
However, as time went by, I realized there was no place for a Bison in a film that was NWP… and I don’t like mixing concepts, so the Bison had to go.
It was about 2006-8 (can’t remember the exact year) where I stumbled upon a powerful opening dialogue/forward to a television documentary series. It immediately sparkled a idea for a short, and what do you know? The retired Bison was the perfect visual match to the talking voice, and to the concept. I brushed him off, and re-designed him to fit the new short.
The design isn’t complete, but it’s a current stand in for the boards. I completed them [the boards] and will be doing a full character rotation.

I have a very good, talented and devoted helper this time in my endeavors… and she will be helping in the production process of the film. So let’s hope in 2 months time, we will have polished final!

Star Wars Tarot- The Sith

One of the most intriguing cards of this deck (I think so at least) was also one of the ones that simply “came to me” image and all without any fighting. In fact, I didn’t have to maul over the idea at all! *BA BUM CHING!*

In consistency with the Star Wars theme, the changing of the suits, and some of the titles/names, “The Devil” card is hereby known as “The Sith” card in the deck.

I had a busy week these past three weeks, and so I wanted to make up for it by putting out at least 2 cards this week, and I’m aiming for a grand total of 4 cards. I also have to make some arrangements, as I wan to reopen commissions for a couple of months now- so hopefully I can see through my 4 cards this week.
So far, it’s off to a strong start!

Star Wars Tarot- Master of Swords

The Master of Swords- both the suite and the SW universe- would obviously be: The Master Swordsman; Mace Windu.

I really saw a very strong, dominant figure for the card- a pillar, if you will. But lots of fire- as in my deck, the Swords are the suite for Fire. That in itself is the reason for the bright, sun heavy and warm palette for the card. I also used the iridescent colors for the border and this time the Lightsaber as well!
Funny little fact, when I was coloring the sky, had forgotten to leave space for the Lighsbater blade- so I had to continue and figure out how I would implement it. Enter one of my favorite mediums: Gouache! So the Lighsaber blade is actually gouache.

Star Wars Tarot- Padawan of Energy

The suites in the Star Wars Tarot are different then the regular Tarot decks. I’ve seen decks that equate the Swords, Wands, Pentacles, and Cups to their elemental concepts, or change then to fit the metaphorical concepts to better suite the content of the deck- and mine is no different.
Instead of “Cups”, I worked off the concept of water- the flowing, calm aspect of it, and reached a verdict that it best suits energy. So this is the “Page” of Cups... now renamed “Padawan of Energy”.

Young Obi-wan fits the category well. I also have a special connection to this card as it was my card in my younger years- so I was tickled pink that Obi-wan matched the content of it as well.
Even though I was removing the “Earthly concepts” form the deck (Zodiac, religious, or concepts non-relating to Star Wars) I opted to leave in the elemental significance as the elements are present in that universe, and are universal. They also serve as a good visual identification to some of the metaphorical concepts.

Obi’s belt buckle is done with the iridescent ink, as is the borders- I only wish the iridescence could be conveyed through a scan- let alone the quality of the images that I feel would be better if I had a better scanner.

Star Wars Tarot- The Lovers

It was a no-brainier to figure out that I would use Anakin and Padme for the Lovers card.
This was one of those pieces that I started originally on a different color- and after a little while realized it was NOT the right color I had in mind. But I never blow steam or go crazy for having to re-start a piece. From previous experience, having to restart usually means any errors get ironed out, and the second time around always come out ten times more glamorous than the first try- so I was delighted to start over.

I kept this card dominantly warm. The only “cool” colors are the green grass and blue waters of Naboo… and this was important in order to include all 4 elements in the card- Fire is the sun behind the Lovers, Air is what they are being formed form (the smoky/cloud) water and earth are represented by the background. I also wanted to include the balcony with the silhouettes to give the image a more vast and epic feel to it.
I also really liked the idea of having Anakin’s both arms embrace Padme- all the while keeping the “flat” style of the art intact. This also proved a good design tool to create that circle effect to really convey that wholeness of both figures together. Another fun tid-bit was trying to simplify Padme’s wedding dress.

A lot of people keep assuming this is Pastel- actually it is not. It's colored pencil on Canson board. Maybe the blending is too smooth for what some people consider pencil art- but these are truly done in colored pencil. In fact, they are being done with the set of 400+ color pencils my Grandmother bought me as a birthday gift- the last one she ever did before passing away.

Star Wars Tarot- The Empress

Like “The Hermit” card, some of the titles themselves are obvious give-aways to the content.

However, it is to note something interesting: I cannot “read” Tarot cards. I have my own deck of cards I “read” from but they are not Tarot. This series is a result of a sort of “epiphany” I had one night… and I decided to run with the idea. After all, Star Wars is full of Archetypes that are found within the Tarot Cards as well, so I decided I would just illustrate what I “felt” fit the image/meaning of the card, and look for the “official” meaning/content after I was done. This way, I wouldn’t be swayed by the pre-conceived notion, but run with my instincts. As an artist (and generally as a person) I run by instinct over knowledge most of the time. My gut is my best intuition so I never ignore it.
What’s funny is after I design the image and then check its meaning- the meaning and my “gut” usually coincide.
Awesome.

Star Wars Tarot

In order to console myself for not being able to attend Celebration V this year, I decided to take upon myself a project that would include me in the shenanigans of the fandom. In fact, I would even extend the fun to include a GIANT project that would take me a LONG time to complete, there fore making my indulgence grossly enormous.
I decided to design a deck of Tarot Cards based off the Star Wars universe.

The first card in this series features not only my favorite character of the Saga (For those who can’t tell, Obi-wan Kenobi), but seems very appropriate for my current situation; after all, I’m all the way here, and the party is all the way in Orange County.

While these cards are based of the most popular deck (the Rider-Waite Deck) I adjusted some concepts to better fit the Star Wars universe, and of course my own artistic vision in the matter. The style I am using is a merge between Medieval Tapestry, and some sort of
flowing geometry that I felt appropriate for the card series.

Two things to note about this Hermit Card: I purposefully left out the stars in the image to keep in tune with the empty void/loneliness of the card. I also added the Homestead in the distance; this to better get that distant feeling through environment and location (in relation to Ben), but also to give the sense of the Guardian and Protector (Wise man) bidding time, quiet reflection, and introspection; common motifs with this Tarot card.

BoY- Werewolf

My Second Submission to the Beasts of Yore Portfolio!
After doing the Wasgo piece, I had selected to do a more “common known” beast, but with a personal twist. I went for Werewolf, and playing of the old Hungarian/Romanian (Bohemia) lore and time period, I grew up with.
I adjusted the contemporary “look” of the Werewolf- from the popular “simply a wolf standing on two” design- to something more relevant to the time period of the 15th century and cultural ethnicity, along with a merge of Wolf-and-human anatomy. You will notice the long curly locks of hair that was relevant fashion for the men in that time period, along with the floral design of the frame- predominantly Hungarian. The horse- tack-like apparel/garb he is wearing is also modeled of the actual horse tack of that era in Bohemia.

Watch his blind eye though- approaching him on his right side, might end up being the last dangerous thing you will ever do.

Hye, Hye, Hyena

Some time ago we had some aboriginals from Africa come to the NCC.
Around that time I had doodles a Hyena, holding pencils in both hands and big monicals (5th down from the left hand side). The story behind that one was pbulished on my blog a few months ago:

A friend of mine and myself were bringing up bad animal stereotypes believed to be true way back in the day.
I WANTED to say that "Hyena's were thought to be Hermaphrodites"... but somewhere along the trail of thought, "Hermaphrodite" became "Androgynous" became "Ambidextrous".
And so I said: "People used to think Hyenas were ambidextrous!"
Pretty smart for fellas who don't even have any thumbs.

Well, when I related the story to the group of Nigerians (who were delighted and laughing at the thought of a Hyena with glasses and writing), they asked that I draw more Hyenas. Well, more like one had asked that I draw a Hyena in his likeness (this fellah laughed so much and at everything that his colleagues had called him "Hyena" as a nick name). At the time I was looking for a small design project to challenge myself, so I agreed.

Seen here were Hyenas based of the group of singers/dancers that came to visit, 3 plain caricatures for fun, and the ambidextrous Hyena.

I figured I'd take my favorite Romance Story/Movie and make valentines out of them for this year. I'm a little late- I was busy in Feb.
My favs are the first and last- primarily becuase I love Selene and Michael. You have to admit, Selene- best female role model ever. And the ONLY one I have after 28 years of not having anything to go by.
I want a bustier. And a werewolf boyfriend.

Shadow of a Trickster

When you look at something for what it is- you are only looking at a fraction of it. Reason, symbolism, and intent remain by the far the most important driving force behind why a person does what they do. Like a shadow that is cast behind them after they move- it's the remain of what was done.
Similar so is our spirit- that drives us to do what we do.

Here, Raven's spirit becomes obvious in the sunset's light- the trickster revealed in a world of cast shadows- where the actions have giving away to reveal the intent- the spirit of someone's actions.

If all that is left are those shadows- let us hope that we can leave behind the reminiscences of good actions, and not the bad- the way Raven left behind the light.
May we leave behind wet-lands and rain forests, good natured people and peace; not the catastrophes of war, and not the the sentiments of extremist ideals and fundamentals that have left the word in anger and hate.

Spirit of the Hunt

This image is reflective of the spirit of my driving force, and the bond of nature that keep us together. The necessity to hunt and provide is not only one that keeps a family together, but it also turns strangers into relations. We depend on one another, we seek comfort in one another, and it's those bonds of love that make us who we are. So many people are so bent on exclusivity and segregation- which only leads to hate and deliberate ignorance.

Listen to the voices of our ancestors- the reason why we are here; becuase if they didn't depend on each other, and care for one another, they would not have been able to exist. It's time we opened our eyes and realized this for ourselves, before we go destroy one another in attempt to prove how much better "we" are.

What keeps us together isn't the knowledge that we are better. It isn't the fear that "they" are coming to get us. It's the reality that we all- irregardless of our heritage and ancestry- have to learn and want to survive. And that is good enough to unite every individual in every species on this planet.

Gothic Logos I

I am designing a series of Gothic themed Logos to be applied on Shirts, Bags, Key-chains and other items. This is the first- a Werewolf Logo featuring the Gothic Knots and a Gothic inscription (in Ulfalias' Alphabet). It translates to "Wolfman" ("Ulfmanna" in Gothic).
I've already have had a few commissions on this shirt alone... so no doubt in the near future I'll be screening a small quantity and putting it up on an Etsy site.

This time working with simple staging- the Theater company is minimal, leaving much stage space for the dancing and acting of the performers. Keeping that in mind, had to think up of simple sets that utilized color and ethnic symbols in order to convey the said culture atmospherically.

Like the Aztec outfit, the natural designs for the traditional garb of the North West Pacific Aboriginals accommodated the dancer very well- leaving him the flexibility and moving capacity that they needed to perform. With these, it was a matter of utilizing that, and then tailoring the outfits to be more contemporary.

I'm applying for a position in Theater Design and Costume Making. The actual company is Aboriginal based, and deals with world wide aboriginal stories- so my goal is to show them my capacity to design for various ethnic cultures, while keeping contemporary theater in mind.
Today's spread deals with the Ainu- The Native Aboriginals of Japan. Seen her, a "Kamuy" wildly known in the culture a "Supernatural Bear". This one is more puppetry meets costume. Left side concepts, right side the quick illustration how it would look on stage.

The other day, me and and friend of mine were bringing up bad animal stereotypes believed to be true way back in the day.
I WANTED to say that "Hyena's were thought to be Hermaphrodites"... but somewhere along the trail of thought, "Hermaphrodite" became "Androgynous" became "Ambidextrous".
And so I said: "People used to think Hyenas were ambidextrous!"
Pretty smart for fellas who don't even have any thumbs.

Yesterday one of my friends noted me that his cat hat to be put down. She was suffering from FIP and was only 5 years old. It's the second cat in the last 2 days that I heard passed away (both of them belonging to different firends). I'll be making a little artistic tribute to both of them respectivly.

Werewolves I

I'm on another binge for the last little bit. This time, it's my favorite "Dark"/"Horror" concept- Werewolves!
I'm sorry, I'm on the Lycian's side. Always have, always been.
So I sketched out some werewolf concepts. After all said and done, the first group at the top looks more like a different "Rival" pack then the bottom ones.
Yes, there ARE female werewolves amongst the sketches, but I'm not keen on the ling eyelashes and "effeminate" style of drawing monsters/animals as they are nearly identical to their male counterparts in nature.
Also, I wanted to design a couple of werewolves with collars because 1) I love cutting into the main and having the indication of the actual neck thickness, and 2) the implication they could belong to someone... sort of like an ancient tribal symbol of being "taken" but with a modern twist.

The Beaver, Seal, and Heron are from local animals, while the Bat and Lion were thrown in from previous zoo trips.

I had VERY little time to put everything together- but those are the kinds of challenges I LOVE!
I'm very proud of the Seagull and that scene.

Two characters based off an article I had read some 3 years ago- about a Rottweiler Guide-dog who dialed 911 for their distressed owner. I made a storyboard depicting a similar- yet this time comical scenario- of a dog and their elderly disabled owner in the park.
I revisited the idea and designed it a-new for fun.

Random sketch done after the daily animation quota. I do them just to clear my head and try my hand at something lighthearted an fun.
I also "broke in" a new Cyan pencil that I bought today. I love these pencils becuase they are extremely pale, and I use them for the under-construction on my animation before taking a darker Blue to them to refine them. Sadly, I can't seem to find them anymore- with most art stores preferring to stalk up on the darker "Light Blue" color as the lightest they have. I'll have to look for them still. :)

Thesis Film Project I

Decided to give everyone a peak as to what I'm doing.
My Film produciton is in full-swing right now, and I'm enjoying the experiance on all levels- educational wise as well as skill wise.
Seen here, a frame from one of my scenes. Since my film is based on the North West Pacific Indigenous styles, the characters are stylized based of the masks, designs and regalia of the local Native cultures out there.
I love this frame. It's literally Wolf's "Stupid puppy face". I'm framing this frame after production and hanging it my room. :)

Film Layouts

During the course of my work, I was experimenting with my layouts. Specifically, finding out what setting would maximize the display when I scan them into the computer.
When I was scanning them in, I realized that in many scenes Raven will be holding the Moon in his beak... and figured that the close-vicinity area would have to be illuminated to match.
Not to mention, this might have to be animated as well... meaning, I'd have to find a way to animated my backgrounds or a separate light source.
Extra work, but a small detail that would make the film so much more.
So after some time playing around with it, I did it. I found myself a solution that gives a great execution and will demand the least amount of work given the situaiton. Of course, the former is more important to me than the later, but that's something that one has to keep in mind while working with deadlines.

We had a gift exchange at the NCC (Native Canadian Center) this year for Christmas. I made 3 miniature hanging button blankets as gifts for it. This is one of the three featuring Eagle. The blankets measure 14" X 23". They were designed, hand cut, hand stitched, and hand made all by myself.

Life Waters

This was a "series" of images that I never actually finished developing due to the huge amount of work on my plate. Originally, the bear was a commissioned piece. Then, I made a Wolf variation for myself, and after, figured I would make a series of "sacred circle" animals, each with the dominant color and placement on the circle to form a giant rainbow color wheel.
Alas, real life got in the way.
And since I don't think I'll be getting back to the idea anytime soon, I figured I could post these three to let everyone have a look. :)
No, the animals aren't "puking"... it's life-water that's coming out of them. The essence of their beings.

I haven't had time to go back to carving wood masks as I used to when I was out West. Primarily becuase I do not have a workbench or vice that aid in stabilizing the wood while hollowing it out. While I'm looking to remedy this very soon, it hasn't stopped me form designing masks at all.
Designed here, a Bat and a Fox.
I've finished the blue prints for the bat mask- that will probably be the first or second one I will carve when I get my bench.

Creature Sketches

I recently acquired (thanks to an amazing friend) a sketchbook that has what appears to be a parchment-like paper in it. Both she (my friend) and I bind our own sketchbooks, and this one wasn't doing a thing for her- so she gave it to me.
And I haven't let it go since. I started with sketches of "Amay-rum", and no doubt will do plenty more of other beasties and creatures and the like. :)

Wasgo

Wasgo is a North West Pacific Native American mythological creature that is half wolf, half orca, with three dorsal fins on his back, fins coming out his floggs, and burning red eyes. In legend, these creatures would terrorize the coastal villages, eat orca, and were sometimes reared by the villagers if mistaken for wolf pups [when young].
This is the second time I drew Wasgo. I wanted to do something with dynamic lighting, underwater, and something that would use atmospheric perspective as to have that "dissapearing into the BG" effect.

I didn't know what to do- so I decided to go with a portrait of Michael Caine (one of my fav actors). And then it transformed to this.
Looks like Alfred is doing a good job Mommy-lecturing Bruce about something. Bruce is humored. XD
So much for posting nearly every day. Between work, Aikido, College, and travel, I haven't had a day off in 4 weeks. It was easier when I was working in a studio. >.<
I gotta work on this "posting-every-day" goal of mine. Somehow, I don't think it's gonna happen. XD

Continuing with my "SW creatures", this was the last one I had time to do before I began work on other things. I hope to be able to do more as the new [College/Uni] year starts, as I have a couple of lecture classes to attend, and I'll probably be doodling in them to take a break from my film production work.

I caught my sister's cold, but thank goodness I'm getting over it in a mere 2 days time. I have a shift tomorrow and I want to be healthy for it! XD
I might post a tasty model sheet teaser form my film for the hell of it. Just to get people excited. :)

Creature Design III

I've been totally neglecting most of my on-line life as of late. But I am happy to report it's for a good cause- by the first day back at my final year at Sheridan, I'll have completed ALL pre-produciton on my short. This means, Leica reel, Fun pack, model sheets, story board, and files will be finished. I'll be able to immediately start work on animation. Huzzah! :)
As for this pic, it's continuing with my creature creations form a while back.
This guy was based off- and created for- a friend of mine way back in the highschool days.
God, that felt like yesterday, and it was like... nearly 10 years ago.

Originally this was a Layout for a commissioned piece. However, sometimes I get good inspirations/concepts that can easily be turned into portfolio pieces.
Since I was looking to get some "newer" layouts into my portfolio, I figured that this one was one I could easily run with and have some fun.
While I am aware that those gargoyles are from Notredam, I used them as atmospheric decor on the top of this building.

Continuing with my Star Wars RPG Aliens I created.
This one is Labhi Trakjurn- the Padawan/apprentice to the last one [Nohe Kamu].
I was showing these around and it peaked the interest of an SW RPG group who might be looking for someone to design their characters. I'm hoping it fall through- I'd love to be back in the SW RPG pool once again. Great way to dwindle away the hours. :)

Just finished up a 6 day work week. I did a ton of drawing, so those will be posted in the upcoming days.
This is the first of 4 I have on hand- a series of creature designs I did growing up and during the time of the Star Wars movies. I had an RPG group, and made a bunch of designs for friends who wanted "SW personas". I wish I had time to do more... I only managed to do two sets of Master-Padawan pairs and then got swamped with work.
I'll get to it eventually. :)

Denim Animal Life Drawing

Just a warning: this image is HUGE.
I wanted to "save" a pair of old jeans I had. Very comfortable and a pity to throw out. So I sewed Deer skin patches over the holes, and took a Sharpie marker to them.
The Topic: Some of my Favorite Canadian Wild life.
These jeans hold even more of a value to me as the Sea Lion on the bottom right pant leg was the one from the Vancouver Aquarium, named "Tag". My sister called him "Bernice's Boyfriend" becuase I adored him. Sadly, he died on July 1st as a result of Oral Cancer.
I got some really funny looks at the park when I was sketching some of the animals... on a pair of jeans. Very entertaining. :)

Batman II

I have been a crazy amount of work lately. It's so varied from drawing to craft making to sewing, I don't even know what to put up first. So I'm working chronologically.
A set of 4 thumbnails I did as a "mini gallery" to figure out which of the four I'm going to choose to polish into a full fledged image. I want to do a "Batman and Robin" image, a la "Teen Titans" or "Animated" Batman. However, depending on the image, I might go for more realism, or comic book style.
I like the idea of Giant Batman towering over a wee little Robin- very "protective father" (Gasp! I said the "F" word!) concept. Inspired by that awesome scene in "Teen Titans" with Robin and Slade ("I already HAVE a father!").
Two images are- literally- "under the wing" types, where as the other two just looming over.
I guess I'm going to put this to a vote. If I have more time, I might do more than one.

The Knights

These guys were a collaborative of interests both me and my sister share.
Big on mythology, and the classic "knights in shinning armor", my sister's horse obsession, and my love for animals- I was obviously going to try and take a stab at doing this topic and these personas.
I have to admit, I kept my sister's in mind when doing the Red Knight's horse, and myself when doing the Blue Knight's horse.
You can expect more from these guys in the future... including a White and Black knight.

I went to see "The Dark Knight" today. What can I say- it's turning out to be a fantastic movie summer for me. "Wall-e" and "The Dark Knight" have made it unforgettable. Highly recommend both those movies.

I realized this today while cleaning. I looked over to my loofah and noticed... well, a hair comically sticking out of it.
I laughed. And then drew this.

Just jumping on the Batman Bandwagon as well.
A little info about the pic: the bat in the picture (the one on the top right) is my favorite family of bats. With over 1,100 species in existence, the Phyllostomidae (leaf nosed bats) are my true loves. :)

No matter what the reason, when I work I give my 200% in the quality that I am delivering. I beleive in human excellence, and the honor and dignity one carries in their work.
In this case, a private client commissioned work from me- a certain character in a "Wild West" type setting. Regardless of the price, I poured into it my all.
It's a challenge to meet the expectations of a client as is, but even more challenging to make whatever the content interesting, and be capable of turning it into your main focus as if it were your favorite topic in the world.
I also posted the final "with character" version for your viewing pleasure. :)

I did this quick sketch for a friend as a "thank you" for her kind gesture. And that was, supplying me with dead things.
And by dead things, I mean, skulls, jaws, hooves, and skin of deer. :)
Yes, I use those things for crafts.
After I was done, I gave it a splash of color for effect.
The garb is based off traditional Plains Native culture.
